Turffontein Climbing Competition
Phumulelea Gaming and Leisure are sponsoring a Climbing Competition on a 25m high wall at Turffontein Racecourse on Sat 27th April 2002. This event is open to all comers, with prizes in categories for both experienced climbers and non-climbers.

The event is part of the 'Day of Champions', which includes other adventure sports such as mountain biking, skateboarding, and abseiling (all for free) The climbing will all be on top-rope, and includes speed and difficulty climbing on the 25m vertical wall. Prizes run from T-shirts and caps, to ropes, cash and many other fun goodies! Many are spot-prizes (or for best fall, worst climber, etc)
Ages: from 9 years to ancient. There is no fee to enter the climbing, but there is a R10.00 fee to enter the grounds. The event starts at 9am, until late! (the wall will be floodlit) Food, fun, beergardens etc abound. Come and support this - it is a precursor to a LARGE climbing competition at the same venue (with a more varied wall) later this year IF it gets the support of the climbing fraternity.

Bring your friends, grandmother, rivals, in fact anyone who wants to have a go.

For queries contact 083 303-0273 or adedventures@netactive.co.za

Agama Atra 2002 by Antonie van Heerden

Due to some private circumstances the competition will not be held this year.

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Instead of losing momentum in this amazing event, there will be a Bouldering Festival in De Doorns on 28 April (the same day that the comp was originally planned).

This will be in the spirit of the last three years Agama Atra Open Air Bouldering Competition, where one of the most important elements of the competition was the social gathering of climbers from all areas in South Africa.

The festival is open to anyone and we encourage everyone to be there. There will be no judges or scorecards, merely friends getting together for a social day of bouldering.  The "winners" will get a slap on the back and there will a couple of spot prizes.

After the event we'll have a braai - but unlike previous years, this will not be catered (except on demand), so bring your own food and beverages.

Best regards
Antonie van Heerden

Kwazulu/Natal Schools Climbing Association - League for 2002

The KZN Inter-School's climbing League is held in the Durban University Sports Centre.  It has been running successfully since 1992 and is set to continue in 2002. The dates for  the events are:  5 May (Prelim 1); 2 June (Prelim 2) and 4 August (Finals).  The event this year has been generously  sponsored by Camping and Outdoors.

The score on the final day, plus the best of the two preliminaries, is used to determine the final score. The school with the top cumulative score receives a trophy.

All climbers climb one route (top-rope) and the top 5 final route (leading) at each event.  Categories E and F top-rope all the routes they attempt.   The category into which a boy or girl climber falls into can be determined from the table below.

Category Date of Birth
A     18/19 1983/1984
B     16\17 1985/1986
C     14/15 1987/1988
D     12/13 1989/1990
E     10/11 1991/1992
F      9 and under       1993 or earlier

The cost of the event is R45.  This must be paid at the start of the League and covers all 3 competitions.  Climbers who enter the League later (i.e. after the first event) are still obliged to pay the full R45.  This fee must be paid in cash at the registration table on the day of the first competition.

Entries close on the Monday before each event.  Late entries, or entries on the day attract and additional R20 each. The names of entrants can be faxed to me at (031) 764-0469.  Please specify gender and category ( Boys A, Girls D etc). Entry forms and  Indemnities will be faxed to the school and must be handed in on the day.

Each school is requested to submit at least 3 names of pupils considered safe and experienced to belay. Each school is also requested to submit at least 3 names of parents who are willing to spend an hour slot scoring. No experience needed.

A member of staff or parent from each school is requested to assist with admin. matters on the day of the event.  Further information on this will be forthcoming closer to the day.

Camping and Outdoors has sponsored the prizes for the final event and a raffle prize will be available as well.  Trophies will also be awarded for the best climbers in the senior boys and girls category and for the school that accumulates the most points overall.

A captain must be appointed by each school, who will collect the numbers  and submit names at the start of the day.  The captain will also assist in conveying information to the climbers if necessary during the day.

It must be stressed that no climbing experience is necessary, although it will obviously be helpful especially for climbers who have not lead a route before.  I can be contacted by the school for training/coaching sessions at Thomas More College at a negligible fee.

A meeting has been called on the 18/3 at Thomas More College.  It will be held in the Staffroom at 19H00.  A Committee will be elected, and League matters will be discussed.  Please make every effort to attend.

Please call me at (031) 764-0149/764-5115 or email me at geraldcamp@freemail.absa.co.za if you can attend.
